How to Disinfect Your Makeup!

Hello Lovelies,

Todays post is going to be a super quick one, but also pretty important. For the most part I feel like people know the general rules for how long to keep their makeup: mascara three months, lip glosses 6 months . . . And while I think that there are some exception to those rules, for instance if you only use your mascara once a week I think it’s safe to keep it for over three months, there are ways to keep your makeup products fresher for longer, specifically your powder products.

One of the main reasons why makeup goes ‘bad’ is because of bacteria growth, gross I know, the same way that your food goes bad eventually. So something you can do to slow this process down is to disinfect your makeup, I had never heard of this until I heard a makeup artist talking about how she disinfected her compact products in between clients. And it was like a light bulb went off in my head, if we clean our brushes and our faces against germs and bacteria, well then shouldn’t we also be doing it to our makeup! Every since I’ve been regularly disinfecting my highly used powder products on a bi-weekly basis.

To disinfect your makeup is a super easy process, so easy it’s almost silly not to do it every once in a while. All you’ll need is some plain rubbing alcohol and a small spritzer bottle. Now if the idea of spraying rubbing alcohol on your makeup creeps you out a bit, you can buy specific products to clean your makeup, but just to save you guys some money the only real difference between the two items is one the price tag, and two some fragrance.

Anyways, all you need to do is fill up your spritzer bottle, spray your powder products down, and then set them out to dry for at least a couple of hours. It’s so simple and easy and can really extend the life of your makeup. The alcohol you spray on kills any surface germs, and kills any that may have spread to the underlying layers of your product.

Now if you want to take this to the next level, and keep your makeup for as long as possible, you can store your makeup in your refrigerator – yes I said it, your refrigerator. Now I know it sound crazy, but think about it, you keep your food in there, nice and chilly, to keep your food from spoiling too quickly, the same applies to your makeup. The small amount of bacteria on your makeup will take longer to produce and spread, keeping your makeup fresh for longer.

Well I hope you guys found this post useful, or at least interesting. Let me know if you guys like these kinds of post, or if you’d rather I be doing more reviews, I’d love to know! Until next time . . .

  1. Brilliant! Thank you so much for posting this. I don’t wear much makeup any more, but I hang on to the few nicer bits and pieces I still have much longer than recommended. Naturally, it would be nice to at least *attempt* to prolong their longevity. I can’t wait to try this out!

  2. I’m freaking out thinking about how nasty my make-up must be! I toss old make-up out regularly… but still. I cleanse my face only to paint germs onto it moments later. I’ll be adding this to my Sunday night spa routine.
